(Courtesy of Homeboy Industries) | Courtesy Homeboy Industries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Huffington Post reports on six theories about why Los Angeles has been seeing a dramatic reduction in gang-related violence and crime.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrom 1988 to 1998 \u2014 known to some as the \u201cdecade of death\u201d \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/04\/21\/150353416\/jumped-in-love-life-and-violence-in-l-a-gangs\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">close to a thousand people per year were killed in Los Angeles<\/a>. Gangs didn\u2019t run all the neighborhoods, but the ones they did, they terrorized. Drugs moved openly on street corners, drive-by shootings occurred with dispiriting frequency, and wearing the wrong color T-shirt on the wrong street could be interpreted as a death wish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So, what accounts for this drastic decline? The only thing that everyone \u2014 from police representatives to community organizers to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/politics-and-law\/the-end-of-gangs-los-angeles-southern-california-epidemic-crime-95498\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Quinones, the author of the Pacific Standard piece<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 can agree on is that there\u2019s no single answer. But if you consider the six theories below, and how they interact and build on each other, you can begin to see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/antonio-villaraigosa\/where-weve-been-where-wer_b_1698422.html\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">why city officials say Los Angeles hasn\u2019t been this safe since the Eisenhower administration<\/a>. \u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.
